Samsung has officially unveiled the chip that will power its upcoming Galaxy S9 flagship, the Exynos 9810. The system-on-chip (SoC) is designed with the goal of closing the gap the iPhone X in terms of raw performance.

Significant Performance Boost

The new chip is built on Samsung’s second-generation 10nm FinFET procedure. Exynos 9810 is laid out in an octa-core setup, of which four are custom performance cores clocked at up to 2.9 GHz. In terms of performance, the new chip doubles the single-core performance of its predecessor, while the multi-core performance has increased by 40 percent.

Graphical performance has increased by 20% thanks to the newer ARM Mali-G72 GPU. In terms of playback, you get 10-bit HEVC and VP9 support. For connectivity, Exynos 9810 is capable of up to 1.2 Gbps downlink as well as 200 Mbps uplink speeds, with support for 6x carrier aggregation.

Neural Learning

Major changes this time are in the neural learning department, especially with the introduction of 3D face detection features similar to the iPhone X.

Such mechanisms not only help recognize specific people automatically within your photos, but also offer better face unlock capability. There is also something called the “realistic face-tracking filters”, which should be Samsung’s answer to the Animoji.

Better Image Processor

The South Korean company will also make newer, better cameras possible with a dedicated image signal processor (ISP), which brings faster processing and stabilization in videos of up to UHD resolution at 120 frames per second, while at the same time reducing noise and taking brighter photos.

The new Exynos 9810 will be just another boost for the Galaxy S9, which is now confirmed to come with minor design changes over its predecessor. Watch this space for more changes on that front.
